Perfect fin system for CO2 deep-freeze applications

For energy-efficient operation of CO2 deep-freeze applications, the fin spacing of evaporators is always an issue. With a small fin spacing, more power can be transferred, but the risk of heavy, disruptive icing increases, which results in frequent defrosting processes and thus reduces efficiency. Roller offers you an optimised heat exchanger system for evaporators that meets the specific requirements of CO2 (PS 80bar!) for small tube diameters of 9.52 mm, coupled with a maximum fin spacing of 12 mm.

CO2 alone does not make a plant energy-efficient

CO2 has become the most important natural refrigerant in refrigeration technology for food retail. However, CO2 alone does not make an energy-efficient system. To support the energy-efficient features of CO2 in the system technology, it requires a fin system for evaporators that optimises the high-energy defrosting costs in deep-freezing.

Efficient operation due to less defrosting intervals

Generally, 6-8 mm fin spacing is used in deep-freezing. Even this distance can be too small if the deep-freeze room is exposed to increased humidity. Frequent defrosting intervals are the result.

For defrosting, both the direct and indirect costs have to be included in the energy cost calculation. The direct costs refer to the electrical defrosting of the ice from the evaporator, the indirect costs to the defrosting heat generated in the room, which must be released again by the refrigeration system when it restarts.

Reduced defrosting intervals coupled with shorter defrosting phases and thus lower energy consumption make a significant contribution to energy-efficient system operation.

Applications of large fin spacing

Large fin spacings become interesting for applications such as

  • Shock freezers
  • Cold rooms with increased humidity input due to frequent door opening caused by charging
  • No strip curtain between two cold rooms
  • No pre-cooling room available

Robust fins for high stability during cleaning operations

With our 0.3 mm thick aluminium fins, we also offer a very robust fin system. This not only partially compensates for the slight loss of performance compared to evaporators with a large heat transfer density (due to smaller fin spacing or staggered tube systems), but also offers a high mechanical resistance during cleaning work.
